I always get these questions: “how long does it take before it lightens my skin?” or “how long do I have to wait before I see results?” These are the questions that you have in mind whenever you buy a skin lightening product. The answer to your question really depends on a few factors:
1. Concentration of the ingredients (or active content) – this is the most important factor. I have tried several skin lightening products in my life and I can honestly tell you which ones work. I can say that kojic acid (my favorite!), glutathione, lactic acid, retinoic acid, vitamin c, melawhite and arbutin do work. However, the concentration of these active ingredients play a big role in its potency. The concentration of at least 3-4% should be in the product in order for it to be effective.
2. Skin type – very important as well. This is where you apply your skin lightening product so it really depends on how fast your skin “accepts” or get use to the product that you’re using. See below to see how long would it take for you to see the results based on your skin type. Important: the estimate below assumes that you use the products at least twice a day, everyday.
- Sensitive skin – 2-4 weeks
- Normal – 4-8 weeks
- Combination – 6-8 weeks
3. Skin color – let’s admit it: if your skin tone is like Oprah’s, then it will take longer before you see results. Most people are very impatient. They want to see the results within a few weeks even though their skin is very dark. Whenever you use a skin lightening product, please be realistic when expecting results. Skin lightening is a gradual process and not instant. Again, please religiously use the products at least twice a day everyday to really see results and don’t give up! Give it sometime and you’ll be happy with the results!
